The work is inspired by Herman Melville’s book Billy Budd. The novel
contains a scene in which a sailor is so emotionally shocked by a false
accusation made at him for a crime that he is unable to defend himself
verbally, stuttering and making strange gurgling sounds in his desperation
to speak. He is left feeling tongue-tied and powerlessagainst the authorities
- a system he previously believed in.
The work as a performance involves old found slides which show traces
of disintegration, live drawings and organised sound. The drawings are of
bankrupt airline logos that are projected with an overhead projector onto
the wall together with the slides. The slides dating from the late 50smainly
contain images of various forms of architecture (residential houses, state
buildings), harbour scenes and views from a ship. Accompanying them are
pre-recorded vocal sounds that play with syllables, phonemes or sound
fragments that stem from made-up words. The various repetitions,
utterances and pauses form vaguely rhythmical sound structures.
